1. Meme

This is a pretty good meme that shows which ethnic/racial groups contributed to the DNA of modern Europeans.

2. Info about meme

I didn’t create the original meme, I just made some edits — improved some of the reconstructions and made the pigmentation more accurate, stuff like that. (This is a good resource for info on ancient pigmentation).

Some of the reconstructions in the original looked pretty goofy. They mercilessly screwed over Bell Beakers and Eastern European Hunter-Gatherers.

The drawing of the Ancient North Eurasian used in my version is an educated shot in the dark. It’s based on Kennewick Man combined with Sunghir Man. We don’t actually have any facial reconstructions of the Ancient North Eurasians because they’re still a pretty mysterious ghost population.

Note: The pigmentation, hair color, and eye colors that I’ve used are based on the genetic data that’s currently available from high-quality sources. I suspect that a lot of these “intermediate to dark” pigmented populations may turn out to be lighter than we currently believe. However, that’s not what the evidence tells us at present. I could be wrong, but I don’t think I am. I won’t get into it here though.

3. Related genetics info

Modern Europeans are primarily descended from three major races/ethnic groups: Early European Farmers, Western European Hunter-Gatherers, and Western Steppe Herders (who were Eastern Europeans). The cluster analysis below is a breakdown of how much ancestry of each race is present in modern European populations. (I’m writing a much longer post that will explain all of this stuff in more detail).

Orange = Early European Farmer (Southern European)
Blue = Western Hunter-Gatherer (Highest in Northern Europe)
Green = Western Steppe Herder (As above; incorrectly labeled ‘Yamnaya’)

4. Facial reconstructions

Some reconstructions of the aforementioned races.

1. Western European Hunter-Gatherers

2. Western Steppe Herders

WSH are mostly descended from Eastern European Hunter-Gatherers. There’s a Corded Ware guy in here but they were ~80% WSH.

3. Early European Farmers

Here’s some Sardinians because I can’t find any good Early European Farmer reconstructions. Although Sardinians are around 95% genetically identical to EEF, this definitely isn’t a 1:1 direct visual comparison, since phenotypes can change over time via things such as positive selection (selective breeding). It’s possible that the EEF weren’t as pale as Sardinians, and that EEF women looked considerably less cute, since Europeans have engaged in neotenous breeding for quite a long time.

5. Outro

I’m currently writing 2 long posts on European genetics/archaeogenetics and putting together a post with a bunch of facial reconstructions of ancient Europe.

One post will include a shit ton of studies I’ve collected, summarized in ultra-TL;DR terms, with shiny HD infographics taken from each one. The other is a remake of my old ‘What is White?’ post, which kind of sucks and I don’t recommend reading it.
